Grading Criteria 

(d) Explain what you completed. 

  • I watched 32 hours worth of continuing education seminars. These videos are watched by therapist every year and they must take post-seminar test and send them in to get graded to ensure that the therapist are keeping up with the continuing education.  These seminars are on updated information and new discoveries and continuously provide different perspectives so that the therapist never get rusty with their approach of helping a client.   

  

(e) Defend your work and explain the component's significance and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work. Provide evidence (photos, transcript, art work, videos, etc) of the 30 hours of work.   

  • Although I didn't take the test to get sent in, I did take the test to show that I followed along and paid attention to the seminar. I also took side notes and wrote down ideas as well.

    (f)How did the component help you answer your EQ? Please include specific examples to illustrate how it helped. 

    • The component helped defend the answers I already have as well as give me ideas of army third answer that I have been struggling with.  For example, during the seminar for Childhood Apraxia of Speech, the presenting SLP described how family/parent involvement helps motivate the client to try which gets a better outcome and faster progress. Another example is, for my answer three I could make it "Stay up to date with rtechincolgical advancements" and explain how the I-Pad has changed the way SlP's work with their client. How The I-pad is an "office in a box" and has all the SLP's speech materials as well as they schedule. The videos just help my general knowledge of speech expand as well as helping me target specific ares of my answers for my EQ.

    Blog 21 - Interview 4 Reflection




    1. What is the most important thing I learned from the interview?  


    • The most important thing I learned from the interview is that, there are benefits and downfalls no matter where you decide to pursue your career as an SLP. Whether that be in a hospital, school, or a private practice; you can't weigh them all equally against each other because all 3 have such different components to them. 

    2.  How will what I learned affect my final lesson?

  • I dont believe there will be too much of a difference between what my lesson would've been before the interview and what it will now be after the interview, aside from me having  more knowledge to present to my audience.

      Blog 20 - Fourth Interview Questions






      1.  Who do you plan to interview?  What is this person's area of expertise?

      • I plan to Interview my mentor Sara Romo, CCC-SLP. She is a licensed SLP who has worked in a school and hospital setting and currently owns her own speech clinic. 

      2.  Post 20 open-ended questions you want to ask an expert in the field concerning your senior project. Your focus should be finding answers to your EQ.

        1. Have you ever experienced working in a setting other than a school district?
        2. If so, can you explain to me, what are the most obvious of differences? 
        3. What do you feel the roles and obligations are of an SLP in a school setting are versus those of an SLP elsewhere? 
        4. What are components that you find most important to help a client reach their development goals? 
        5. What do you feel is the importance of a parent's role in a child's speech therapy? 
        6. How much of a role SHOULD parents play in the success of their child in speech therapy? 
        7. From personal experience, how much involvement have you seen parents have compared to what you believe it should be?
        8. Have you ever had to be a speech therapist in an Early Intervention plan? 
        9. If so, what exactly were the responsibilities you had to fulfill?
        10. Do you believe that Early Intervention is an important aspect o f speech therapy for the success of a client?

        • A speech therapist can best help her client meet their language development goals by consistency. 
      3. 3 details to support the answer 

        • Good attendance at therapy and frequent practice at home leads to faster progress.
        • When children do not have consistent attendance, their progress slows, and they are more likely to regress during these periods of time when they are not receiving services. 

        • Consistent attendance in speech/language therapy sessions allows routine practice of communication skills, as well as faster progress toward therapy goals.

        • Consistency is a key element of successful speech therapy cycles because practice of communication skills helps the overcome of the diagnosis. And when clients are not provided with consistency through out the speech therapy cycles their progress will slow and can even regress instead of get better.

      Blog 18 - Answer 2






      1.  What is your EQ?
      • How can a speech pathologist best help a client meet their language development goals?

      • A speech therapist can help a client best meet their language development goals by making sure there is active parent involvement.
      3.  What is your second answer? (In complete thesis statement format)

      • A speech therapist can best help a client meet their language development goals by early intervention. 
      4.  List three reasons your answer is true with a real-world application for each.

      • Prevention of a disorder - If there is early intervention, a speech disorder can be pushed back/delayed and the disorder can even be avoided all together.
      • Strategies - During early intervention, a speech therapist can teach strategies to help a client compensate for their disorder. Ex: If a child with down syndrome can't speak, they can be tought gestures, Baby Sign, and even ASL. 
      • Basic Skill - Early Intervention gives a client with language delays a better chance at having appropriate social, communicative skills at the age level they should. 
      5.  What printed source best supports your answer?

      • The printed source that best supports my answer is an article about early intervention written by the AmericanSpeech-Language-Hearing Association.

      • Some other sources that support my answer are sources found on a website called Day 2 Day Parenting and all the content the website is developed and written by their team of early childhood professionals: Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech-Language Pathologists, Developmentalists, and Dietitians.

      • Early intervention is an important component of helping ensure a successful speech therapy cycle. It can help reduce the need of speech therapy as the client gets older and can even eliminate the need of therapy past the developing stages of the diagnosis.

      Blog 17 - Interview 3 Reflection

      1. What is the most important thing I learned from the interview?  

      • The most important thing that I learned from the interview is that my answer one is not only something I consider important to the success of a client but also something speech therapist themselves consider to be important as well. 
      2.  How has your approach to interviewing changed over the course of your senior project?

      • I believe my approach to interview has changed over the course of the senior project by the way I phrase and present my questions. At first it was very professional and strict and now its more that I'll ask what I think is the gradual next question and I don't mind asking for further explanation instead o f moving on to the next question.

      Blog 16 - Independent Component 2 Approval




      1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.

      • What I plan to do for my 30 hours is to do more mentorship/volunteer hours at My World Speech Therapy. 

      2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

      • I will take notes of every speech session I attend and upload it to the log to amount to 30 hours. If I happen to be working with files or something other than observing, I will take notes of that as well. 

      3.  Explain how this component will help you explore your topic in more depth.

      • This component will help me explore my topic more in-depth because I will be watching SLP's and SLPA's in their natural habitat of working with their clients. I will see interaction between parents and SLP's and I will see the interaction amongst the SLP'S. There will also be the benefit of experiencing the running of a private practice and seeing how to approach regional center and kaiser because they are the services that provide clients through insurance.
